alamo drafthouse draft house downtown boarded up ritz theater

Alamo Drafthouse will require moviegoers to wear masks when theaters reopen, although the company has not yet announced when it will open its doors.

The theater chain closed theaters in March due to COVID-19. Movie theaters were permitted to open up to 25% capacity on May 1 when Gov. Greg Abbott announced phase one of his plan to reopen Texas, but many stayed closed.

The move comes after AMC theaters announced they would not require masks, only to reverse course a day later after receiving criticism. The company said it wanted to avoid "political controversy."
