Man shot and killed in North Austin shootout with Austin police officers

A man was shot and killed by Austin police officers in North Austin Sunday afternoon after a pair of officers found themselves in a shooting with the man on an unrelated call, according to the Austin Police Department.

APD said the two officers were called to investigate an unrelated Motel 6 shooting at around 3 p.m. Sunday and later heard gunshots at the intersection of East St. John's Avenue and I-35.

The officers reported that they saw a man who appeared to be firing a weapon at a tent, according to APD Chief Joseph Chacon. The man then fired at the officers after they ordered him to get on the ground.

The pair fired back, and the man "did go down," Chacon said in a press conference. He died at the scene at 5:06 p.m. after the officers attempted first aid.

The victim involved in the unrelated motel shooting was hospitalized with critical injuries and is now in stable condition.

Per APD policy, the two officers were placed on administrative duty as the investigation continues, and body camera footage will be released within 10 days.
