Austin FC has signed 21-year old Slovenian star Žan Kolmanič as their newest left-back defender, the club announced via Twitter Wednesday morning.

Kolmanič celebrated his 21st birthday in style by announcing he was joining the Verdes for their inaugural season.

"I'm very happy to join the club," Kolmanič said. "I look forward to seeing you all soon and grow the Legend together."

Kolmanič has made 44 appearances at current team NK Maribor since 2017. The club is currently 15-time national champions in the Slovenian PrvaLiga, Slovenia's premier league. Kolmanič has also played nationally for Slovenia's U-21 team.

The new prospect has already been called "the Luka Doncic of the MLS" by fans as rumors swirled around the signing for nearly a week. Slovenian dailies sites Ekipa24 and Vecer reported the signing on Thursday, Feb. 25, and Austin FC owner Anthony Precourt teased the announcement with a tweet on Tuesday morning.

Kolmanič is the eighth defender to sign with Austin FC and would be the youngest on the roster alongside 20-year-old No. 1 SuperDraft pick Daniel Pereira.

Austin FC's current roster sits at:

  • 4 goalkeepers
  • 8 defenders
  • 6 midfielders
  • 6 forwards

After Kolmanič, the club has seven open spots to fill before it reaches its player cap.
