Austin police chief search narrows down to 3 candidates, including Interim Chief Chacon

Interim Chief of Austin Police Joseph Chacon, Assistant Chief of Dallas Police Avery L. Moore and Deputy Chief of LAPD Emada E. Tingirides are the three finalist for the Austin police chief role.

The city of Austin is getting closer to announcing its next Austin police chief, narrowing the pool of candidates from 46 to three.

The candidates include:

  • Joseph Chacon, interim chief of police, Austin Police Department
  • Avery L. Moore, assistant chief, Dallas Police Department
  • Emada E. Tingirides, deputy chief, Los Angeles Police Department
The search for a new police chief began back in March after Austin police chief Brian Manley retired. Assistant police chief Joe Chacon was appointed interim chief as Austin City Manager Spencer Cronk kicked off a national search.

After bringing the pool of candidates down from 46 to seven in July, the finalists were interviewed by three panels which included community stakeholders, law enforcement partners, and City of Austin executives.

Before Cronk announces a final decision on who will run APD, the community will have an opportunity to meet the finalist and provide feedback. The meetings will be hosted in-person at the Palmer Events Center with opportunities to watch live virtually at ATXN.TV. They will take place Aug. 18 and 19 from 7-8 p.m.

A candidate is expected to be chosen by the end of the month.
