Just after 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the Austin Police Department responded to a robbery at Barton Creek Mall in West Austin. While there, officers later evacuated the public after hearing reports of shots fired but found no evidence of a gun in the mall.

The robbery involved three people breaking glass cases and stealing items from the Helzberg Diamond store, in between the Macy’s and AMC. When officers heard of potential shots fired inside the mall, Austin Fire Department and EMS were called in case of any injuries. None have been reported.

“Most likely, that shots fired report came as a result of the individuals hitting the hardened glass at the Helzberg store trying to break it,” Michael Bullock, a public information officer with APD said. Surveillance footage shows people at the mall running in response to the incident. Police noted others decided to shelter in place.

The robbery resulted in some lost inventory at Helzberg, but police say the value of those items is still uncertain. They are currently talking with store workers and reviewing security footage. No suspects have been arrested.

After police cleared the mall, it closed for the night. Police noted stores can individually decide whether to resume normal operations Sunday.

Information about the robbery or videos taken at the time can be shared with the Austin Police Department.
