A little over a month since the UK variant of COVID-19 was found on the University of Texas campus, the university sent out an alert that another variant originating from California has been identified at a campus testing site. The individuals who tested positive for the B.1.429 variant of the virus have been identified and are quarantining.

Some studies have shown that the current vaccines being distributed against COVID-19 can fight certain variants, but in its alert, UT states that there is little data about the transmissibility and severity of the new variant.

The variant was first identified in California in November 2020 and has since been found in 19 other countries.
