Austin electrifies transit with zero-emission buses
(Capital Metro/Twitter)

Austin is making public transit electric by introducing the first interoperable charging buses in the country. In partnership with Siemens Mobility and Proterra Inc., Capital Metro now has 12 zero-emission electric buses on the roads.

The initiative is part of Project Connect, an overhaul of the city's transit system, and a bigger plan to purchase only zero-emission electric buses by 2022. The City of Austin also plans to integrate 125 new electric bikes in addition to the 200 already on the streets since February

Electric buses provide for a quieter and greener ride, keeping the air clean with solar and wind energy. The buses come complete with USB charging ports throughout and have an open floor plan to accommodate more riders.

Capital Metro is currently working on creating a new bus yard to support charging future electric-only buses. When the warehouse is complete, it will house 214 buses and be able to charge 187 buses at any time.

Electric buses already in service can be tracked here.
