Commissioner Morath's address to parents and teachers

The Texas Education Agency will allow schools to have online-only instruction for the first eight weeks of the school year, the agency said in updated fall 2020 guidelines.

TEA Commissioner Mike Morath announced that schools will be allowed to adopt a four-week transition period with 100% virtual instruction. Afterwards, they will be able to adopt an additional four weeks if necessary.

"Our framework ensures that there will be on-campus instruction available for all students who need it in the state of Texas," Morath said in a video address. "But at the same time, we know we need to provide local schools with flexibility to adapt to local health conditions, especially given the rise in COVID cases that we're seeing across the state."

Morath said the agency came to the new guidelines with input from students, parents, teachers and medical professionals.

"We will support flexibility at the local level to ensure all of our schools remain safe and are available to our kids," he said.
