Austinites test Moderna vaccine with 95% efficacy rate

Austin's COVID-19 situation is looking up and the city is gearing up to receive not one, but two treatments and two vaccines.

Biotechnology company Moderna has demonstrated a 94.5% efficacy rate in its COVID-19 vaccine. Of the 30,000 people participating in Moderna's Phase 3 trials, over 400 have been Austinites that have received the vaccine via Benchmark Research.

Moderna isn't the only company testing in Austin with Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. testing 200 participants at the Austin Regional Clinic. The Pfizer vaccine has shown a 90% efficacy rate.

Both vaccine trials gave half of the participants the vaccine and half a placebo. After receiving two injections weeks apart, they will be monitored for symptoms of COVID-19 over the course of two years.

Moderna announced on Monday that of the participants, 95 COVID-19 cases were found: 90 in the placebo and five in the trial group. During a second study, an additional 11 cases were found, all in the placebo group.

According to Moderna, some participants also reported pain in the injection area after the first vaccine with fatigue and joint pain following the second injection.

The next step is for Moderna to apply for emergency use FDA status, which Pfizer has already qualified for. Moderna is expected to put in its application within the next few weeks and have 20 million doses of the vaccine available by the end of 2020.

Austin will also receive two treatments, regeneron and bamlanivimab, as announced by Gov. Greg Abbott last week.
