Texas Capitol amps up security in preparation of Trump protests
(Bob Daemmrich)

DPS troops lined the Texas Capitol Jan. 7 after pro-Trump protesters infiltrated the U.S. Capitol.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is ramping up security measures at the Texas State Capitol in response to an FBI bulletin stating that more armed, pro-Trump protests are being planned at every state capitol from Jan. 16 up until "at least" Inauguration Day.

DPS issued the following statement: "The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is continuously monitoring events and their impact on public safety. As a result, the department has deployed additional personnel and resources to the Texas State Capitol."

The department does not issue operational specifics and it will adjust operations as needed, according to the statement.

The Texas Legislature will meet in-person at the Texas Capitol on Tuesday for its 2021 session.

The Texas State Capitol was stormed last Wednesday during a pro-Trump protest that coincided with the riot at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. Austin protesters continued to occupy 11th street until crowds started to disperse around 4 p.m.

DPS shut the building down after the attempted surge, keeping it closed the rest of the day, but reopened it on Thursday.

According to the FBI and National Parks Service, some people from the group that rioted in D.C. on Wednesday are still a threat to the Capitol. Since the riot, democrats have called for the immediate removal of Trump under a single charge, "Incitement of insurrection."

In preparation for riots, at least 10,000 troops will be deployed in D.C. by Saturday, with an available 5,000 by request from other states, according to the head of the National Guard.
