Hudson Card will reportedly be chosen as the starting quarterback for UT. (UT)

In the new era of Longhorn football, new UT coach Steve Sarkisian has reportedly chosen Austin native Hudson Card for the starting quarterback position.

The first game of the season is quickly approaching and according to Horns247, Sarkisian made the tough decision to name Card the starting QB over red-shirt junior Casey Thompson, although both will likely play in the first game against Louisiana at home. No official announcement has come from the university.

Card and Thompson have vied for the starting position since the spring. While Thompson was the likely choice at the start of the summer, Card has proven to protect the ball better, according to the sports site.

Card is a red-shirt freshman who attended Lake Travis High School, where he was an All American and two-time all-state honoree. He served as the third-string quarterback in 2020 and played two games for UT last season.

The Austinite will succeed four-year quarterback Sam Elingher, who is now playing with the Indianapolis Colts.

With Sarkisian's first season with the Longhorns about to kickoff and no Elingher, it's about to be a new era for UT football.
